OX Science Program Diversity Initiative

The OXSPDI underscores OX’s commitment to scientific excellence and is a strategic move to enhance the rigor and relevance of our science program. By fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, we aim to elevate the quality of our science program and set new standards for the field.

the idea behind the initiative and the activities planned are rooted in the following:

  • Diverse perspectives lead to better science. Different backgrounds and experiences contribute to a wider range of ideas and approaches to problem-solving;

  • Addressing historical inequities. Science has historically excluded and marginalized underrepresented communities, so including those voices is a step toward supporting a more equitable field;

  • Relevance to diverse communities. Science should be relevant to everyone. Including diverse perspectives ensures research addresses the needs and concerns of all communities, not just those traditionally represented in science.

The OceanX Science Diversity Initiative (OXSPDI) began in 2020 and focuses on the representation of BIPOC individuals in ocean science, exploration, conservation and research. The goal of the program is to provide resources to individuals from underrepresented minority groups with an interest in ocean exploration, conservation and research, and to provide the pathway for increasing diversity in the pool of participants in ocean science as it relates to research, ship operations and media. The program includes visits by OceanX personnel to colleges and Universities with high diversity and/or programs that support BIPOC students, and in-person and virtual programming. Additionally, a website dedicated to enhancing diversity in the ocean science and media space, will serve as a platform for access to ocean-related scientific content and resources. The OXSPDI serves as a resource providing information about the OceanXplorer crew, research team and media team, and a list of relevant institutions, programs and activities. There will also be opportunity for individuals to participate in lectures and special events.

OceanX Data Challenge

OceanX Science Impact Data Challenge

A unique opportunity for data scientists and AI enthusiasts to accelerate marine science and explore the deep sea aboard the OceanXplorer.

OceanX invites post-doctoral researchers, and emerging professionals to participate in the OceanX Science Impact Challenge. This multi-phase initiative aims to harness innovative data science and AI expertise to advance OceanX’s AI R&D program, including our AI platform and digital twin projects.

What is the Challenge?

Participants will work in teams (2-3 people) to develop robust data solutions and prototypes that address critical marine science challenges, such as enhancing geospatial understanding, visualisation of abstract data and streamline data analysis for mapping. You'll leverage real-world multimodal data collected by the OceanXplorer from the Cabo Verde expeditions, including:

  • High-resolution mapping data (i.e. bathymetry, seafloor imagery)
  • eDNA samples (i.e. geographically correlated genetic information )
  • ROV and submersible footage (i.e. geo-referenced visual observations of marine life and habitats)
  • Environmental sensor data (e.g. nutrient measurements, temperature, salinity, depth)

Why Participate?

  • Innovate for the Ocean: Contribute directly to the groundbreaking OceanX’s R&D program and make a real-world impact on ocean management and conservation.
  • Personal & Professional Growth: Hone critical skills, build a valuable portfolio project, and network with fellow innovators and OceanX experts.
  • Exclusive Experience: Finalists will present their work in New York City, gaining unparalleled access to OceanX leadership and marine science experts.
  • Real World Application : The winning team will join the OceanX team aboard the OceanXplorer science vessel to see their solution implemented and tested in a real-world ocean environment!

Who are we looking for?

Scientists with experience in marine and environmental science research.

Passionate and experienced coders eager to apply their technical skills to significant environmental challenges

Individuals interested in developing real-world applications and making an impact in the acceleration of marine science tools in order to unlock the ocean’s sustainable potential.

We particularly encourage participation from underrepresented groups in STEM.

Key Dates:

  • Campaign Launch: August 19
  • Application Deadline: September 30
  • Development Window: October 13 - November 8
  • First Meet-Up in NYC: November 7-9
  • Grand Finale in NYC: Feb/Mar 2026

Join us in accelerating discovery and protecting our planet's most vital resource!

OceanX Visits

Our goal is to foster collaboration, in order to create pathways for increased representation in ocean exploration, conservation, and research.

BIMS Week | December 1-7, 2024

BIMS highlights and amplifies Black voices while inspiring younger generations. In doing so they hope to create outreach opportunities, scholarships for the youth, as well as a documentary and coffee table book highlighting Black marine scientists past and present. Their goal is to increase the diversity in marine science while also providing a place to uphold the excellent Black scientists who already exist in the field! OceanX has supported the program and joined BIMS events and posted job openings via its mailing list.

BIMS Membership:

2020: 0

2021: 56

2022: 311

2023: 450 members across 32 countries

2024: 590 members across 34 countries

Past: St. John’s University | October 18, 2024

This visit was organized by Rachel Pereira, Ed.D, Esq., the inaugural Vice President of Equity and Inclusion. It included various meetings with the administration, faculty, and students to discuss OX’s Science Program and the Diversity Initiative, followed by a tour of their science labs. The agenda for the day was packed with meetings starting with the President, followed by the President's cabinet, Provost and STEM-focused faculty, students and members of the Board of Trustees. During these meetings, we brainstormed ideas for collaboration and ways we can serve underserved and BIPOC students in their science programs. The discussions were insightful and fostered a mutual understanding of each institution’s strengths and needs.

We also created a video for one of their classes:

Here is the Hudson River water quality sampling demonstration video:

Jeriyla and Kailani (with amazing filming by Eben) collected the water samples in the Hudson River at Piermont Pier in Piermont, NY on Friday, 11/8. We did some fish seining as well in collaboration with the Columbia University Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory Hudson River Field Station (Margie Turrin and Marisa Annunziata).
